SUMMARY

Pets are social creatures but are most often left alone and inactive all day - which is not good for their physical and emotional well-being. Rascaltech is a group of Designers, Engineers and Cat Lovers that are addressing this problem by creating low-cost, autonomous and intelligent pet toys that can stimulate and engage pets even when owners are not present. 'Madeline' is Rascaltech's first product, and will be launched with a Kickstarter campaign in October 2018.

MADELINE

While most pet toys require human intervention, Madeline is an intelligent 'flower' that uses special, proprietary technology to detect the presence and location of cats, thereby enabing her to play with cats using her laser. Features innclude the ability to set 'playtime' during the day or night while owners may be away or asleep, multiple playmodes, 'playtime tracking'. Significantly, Madeline will be priced at $30-40 which will be accessible to most pet owners, which is contrast to some other 'intelligent' pet toys which are usually priced in the range of $150-200.

BACKGROUND

100 Words

Pets are social creatures but are most often left alone and inactive all day - which is not good for their physical and emotional well-being. Rascaltech, a team of Designers, Engineers and Pet Lovers have created a fantastic new cat toy called 'Madeline' who uses special, proprietary technology to detect the presence and motion of cats thereby enabling her to creative stimulating and healthy playtime using her laser. Madeline is highly intelligent, and can be configured to play with cats using different playmodes during the day or night when owners might be at work or asleep. Madeline is designed to motivate cats of varying age and disposition in order to make them happy, healthy and more engaged.

Pets are social creatures but are most often left alone and inactive all day - which is not good for their physical and emotional well-being. Rascaltech is a team of Engineers, Designers and Pet Lovers who want to address the lack of available intelligent and affordable pet toys that encourage the mobility, interaction and cognitive stimulation of pets.

Madeline, Rascaltech's first product, is a beautiful and intelligent 'flower' that leverages special, proprietary technology which enables her to be aware of a cat's presence and motion, and can therefore intelligently play with cats using her laser. Using a mobile App, Madeline can be set to play with cats during specific 'playtimes', for example during the day when owners may be away, or during the night when owners may be asleep. Madeline can track the amount of 'playtime' with cats to help set optimal activity goals. She also features different 'playmodes' ('tag', 'merrygoround' and 'jitterbug' etc.) that can elicit different behavioural responses from cats like 'chasing' , 'stalking' and 'attentive observation'. Madeline is designed to motivate cats of varying age and disposition in order to make them happy, healthy and more engaged.

600 Words

What you've heard is true: the pet industry is booming. According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), Americans will spend over $70 Billion dollars this year on their pets, and while most of this spending is on Food and Veterinary services, a considerable (and growing) portion of this spending is discretionary in nature. As we adapt to the new demographic reality that people are living longer and therefore less likely to have children in the home, more people are coming to view pets as literally 'part of the family', and because we all care about our family member's well-being, the focus of this spending is increasingly 'health oriented'. Premium foods are now positioned as 'healthy' and of course veterinary services are clearly health-oriented, but increasing attention is now given to the overall fitness and mental welfare of pets in their daily lives.

Pets are inherently social animals who unfortunately spend a lot of time alone in environments that don't provide a lot of stimulation, which is a negative contributor to their overall physical and mental health. Rascaltech has set out to solve this problem. They are a team of Engineers and Designers who love pets, and who want to address the lack of available intelligent and affordable pet toys that encourage mobility, interaction and cognitive stimulation and which can help busy pet owners create more invigorating activities for their pets.

Rascaltech's first product is Madeline, a beautiful and intelligent 'flower' that leverages special, proprietary technology which enables her to be aware of a cat's presence and motion, and can therefore intelligently play with cats using her laser. Using a mobile App, Madeline can be set to play with cats during specific 'playtimes', for example during the day when owners may be away, or during the night when owners may be asleep. Madeline can track the amount of 'playtime' with cats to help set optimal activity goals. Madeline also features different 'playmodes' ('tag', 'merrygoround' and 'jitterbug' etc.) that can elicit different behavioural responses from cats like 'chasing' , 'stalking' and 'attentive observation'. Madeline is designed to motivate cats of varying age and disposition in order to make them happy, healthy and more engaged.

Significantly, Madeline will be priced at an MSRP of $30-40 which is considerably less expensive than the few 'intelligent pet toys' currently available which tend to range in price from $150-200, placing them far out of range of the average consumer. Our goal is to make Madeline within the reach of all pet owners. Given that any pet toy will ultimately become a fixture in the home, Madeline is designed for the 'aesthetically conscious' consumer, those who appreciate design, and a little bit of whimsy. Inexpensive pet toys tend to lack any 'human endearing' aesthetic, while the very expensive toys tend to have a 'technological' look and feel. Madeline 'fits' within a family home as opposed to adding to the ever growing mound of 'technology black boxes' infiltrating our living spaces.

Rascaltech's design and brand philosophy is based around an 'elegant yet fun' aesthetic; to this end, they've also created 'decorative packs' which enable Madeline to be coloured and styled with different themes, thereby enabling her to fit into any home decor. In the future, Rascaltech plans to release a series of intelligent but inexpensive toys in the price range of $20-30 that interact both with Madeline and pets, in order to create a variety of stimuli and to hone in on natural pet instincts so that they can be happy and engaged every day.

250 WORD 'PET TECH / HEALTH NARRATIVE'

We're all aware by now that 'we humans' have to make a little bit more effort watching our waistlines, but our problems also extend to the other 'members of our families': our pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention has indicated that in the United States, over 60% of cats can be classified as 'overweight or obese', and dogs don't fare much better, with 56% pushing the scales past a healthy norm.

This isn't just a matter of basic health, it can effect the longevity and wellbeing of pets. Dogs for example, will live on average 1.8 years longer if they are fit, as opposed to obese and inactive. [1] There are a few issues including the 'social bond' between that has to be considered as those 'extra treat habits' do seem to affect our pets health as much as it might our own, but unsurprisingly, diet and exercise are an important factor as well. [2]

But there is hope! The technology boom that is transforming our lives is also coming to improve the wellbeing of our pets. Pet spending will be over $80 Billion this year, and a growing portion of that expenditure will be on toys and technology for pets, specifically those related to health.

Well established pet brands sucks as Friskies have been producing video games for pets (yes, you read that right!) which include titles such as 'Cat Fishing', 'Jitterbug' and 'Pull 'n Play'. There are fitness trackers for Dogs which monitor health as well as count steps, such as 'Whistle' - in particular, PetSafe a major manufacturer of pet toys in the US has noticed increased demand for cat toys over the last few years.

A new company called Rascltech is now leading the trend with a product called 'Madeline' - an intelligent flower that can 'sense' cats in order to play with them during the day or evening when owners are away or asleep. Creating a little more daily activity for Felix and Whiskers, along with proper diet and nutrition, can help cats nudge towards better overall wellbeing and longevity.
